BIG L 2010

by *SURFACE
May 26th 2010 - 3 comments

Full of life, enthusiasm, and more adrenaline than a Pantera concert, Eliel Hindert splits his time between academic life at the University of British Columbia and traveling as a vagabond skier in search of the softest snow North America has to offer. Below, Big L tells the tale of his 09/10 season. This season has by far been the most enjoyable, most craziest, most gnarliest, and really just the most awesome one to date. With over 13,500 miles traveled thus far and a long ago lost shred day count, it has simply been surreal. We kicked things off in the fall with backyard jib sessions, the best of which had Jello wrestling going on at the same time!. Then the snow started, like really started. Six foot base for Baker on opening day and 80cm (like three feet to the America folk) of fresh at Whis all helped me jump right back into the natti huck and spin cycle. Also got my first day of filming done with Dendrite Studios soon after with a night Cat Skiing session from 6pm to 4am on an undisclosed location. Perspectives #6 - Ten Years from Dendrite Studios on Vimeo. Enjoyed the snowiest November and December in Whistler on record until Christmas time called for the annual trip back home to shred with the Surface crew?whoops I mean? see the family. Banged out a sick catalog with the whole crew and got a chance to see, shred, and floss all the goodies for next year. Also got my first day of snowmo-shredding in Utah, immediately followed by a snapped suspension system, but it was back to BC before I had time to worry about it. Perspectives #2 - Night from Dendrite Studios on Vimeo. Headed back up North and assembled the crew of Surface shreds Joel Whalen, Rob Heule, photo/tweet master Andrew Strain, and the infamous lost boy Shayne Metos for a month of touring around British Columbia and Alberta. Twelve demo stops took us through some insane places, amazing people, and more epic pow than I ever thought possible. If you get a chance to come to BC take it, you?ll probably just never end up leaving like Shayne, who we left for two weeks somewhere outside of Nelson because the snow was too good to leave. Once we wrapped up the tour in Whis, it was right back across BC to collect Shayne and keep the travels alive with an all-nighter down to Colorado for the always exciting, and mildly disturbing, SIA. People were stoked, free goodies were claimed, and some excessive partying may have occurred. Then it was back over to Utah for a few more days of shredding around with the Utah crew, including a jump session with some of my favorite Utah shreds Carston Oliver, Demo Littig, and Eric Baulken. From then on it was return to Canada the constant cycle of sled, shred, film, repeat with Dendrite for the next few months. Got to explore tons of new zones, meet some of my longtime ski heroes, and shred some infinitely fun terrain. The rest of the season is really just a blur a sledding/shredding around the backcountry of Whistler, and some more Utah, with a Cat Skiing trip to the interior tossed in for good measure. The good times kept on flowing with a quick succession of the Olympics, Telus Festival, and the never disappointing Orage Masters. Then just when I thought that it was time for Spring park shred winter came right back in the form of an invite to head down to Cooke City, MT for some late season pow with Mike Henitiuk, Sean Pettit, and Oliver Chornus. With only 50 permanent residents, the town is built for sled access to shred spots, and that?s exactly what we did, logging banger after banger for almost a week straight. Insane doesn?t even begin to describe this trip and got to enjoy the cherry on top of landing my first dub cork in the backcountry.A day of cruisin from duneis on Vimeo.Another 24 hour drive later and I managed to get back to Vancouver and un-pack my gear just in time to get a call from the Utah crew once again pack right back up and head down to Utah for another 2-3 feet of white fluffy goodness. And that my friends, is where you find me now, en route and in transit once again writing up a recap for a season that seems to be far from over. I never can be too sure of where the nomadic life will take me but with trips to Windells at Mt. Hood, spring shred back in Whistler, a few sure to be epic weeks at Momentum Ski Camps, and my fingers crossed for an inaugural trip south of the equator to chase the ever elusive shred, I can only sit back and be stoked on whatever comes along next. var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Handrails, Self Employment, and Ski Bumming: the Story of Ian Wade

by *SURFACE
May 21st 2010 - 5 comments

From urban warrior to full-time business owner, Ian Wade tells the story of a typical day on the Brighton Park Crew and his transition into the retail world. Although Ian's schedule did not allow for capturing media of his exploits, make no mistake that he absolutely slays park and urban, with or without filmers and photographers. From the words of Ian Wade....Over the summer I opened a small boutique in Salt Lake called FRESH (870e 900s) with my sister.Needless to say it?s awesome and I love it. Some favorite brands we carry include Beta Unit, Ambiguous, Lifetime Collective, Insight, and Gravis. The shop took up most of my time and energy; this meant my winter was totally different than any other I?ve had. I was lucky to get a job on the Brighton Terrain Park Crew so I could ski and get a paycheck at the same time. I only got to go skiing (not working) once this season and due to lack of snow in SLC and schedule conflicts, was unable to shoot urban with my good buddy Ian Matteson.Since my season was pretty uneventful I?ll run you through a day on Park Crew so the kids who think we don?t do anything can hear otherwise.5:50 ? Up6:15 ? Trax6:45 ? Bus7:45 ? Clock In8:15 ? On the Lift with shovel and rake8:30 ? Groom My-o-My Jumps, set rails in at Candyland, and groom upper and lower Majestic . We?ll also dig in new rails in the morning.10:30 ? Breakfast/Lunch12:30 ? Put in new features for contests or just to make the park more fun. If we don?t have anything to put in we?ll groom the park.4:30 ? POLAR Bears, Blunts, and Gunnies: Jeff Kiesel 2010

by *SURFACE
May 13th 2010 - 4 comments

In his own words, the most prolific polar bear in all of skiing tells the tale of his adventures through the winter months. Hello Internet world, this is Jeff Kiesel. This season was a rather mellow one for me, and I spent most of my time in Utah shredding Park City park and various powder locations. The season started out pretty powy, and I certainly got my earliest pow turns, which was neat.Park City hired a new park manager this year and it couldn?t have gone any better, right from the start the park was amazingly sick, they had a 3 jump line (never seen that in early season PC!) and a bunch of awesome jibs. They even had a separate rail park as well.Late November/Early December at PCMR from Evan Heath on Vimeo.EARLY SEASON PARK PREVIEW classic GoPro footy from Elder Taylor Brody, showing the superfun early season park on it?s last legs right before Pick ?n Shovel opened, see you in a year and a half buddy! In December, I started coaching for Axis Freeride up in Park City for another season. That couldn?t have been more fun, due to the awesome coaches and even sicker kids! Definitely be on the look out for these little PC steezers, in a few years they?ll be running this show.Coaching the superpros of tomorrowAlso in December I tried to make it to Rails to Riches back east at Killington, but due to the delaying of the comp and my school schedule I couldn?t make it, super bummed about that but I was stoked to see Lil John, Compton, and Will absolutely slay the set up via the internet and take the podium.Since I didn?t make it to Killington, I did a bunch of park filming with filmer extraordinaire Paul Braunstein with his delightful new 7D in the wonderful parks that had just opened in lovely Park City. The Re-Up from Paul Braunstein on Vimeo.I hadn?t done a slopestyle in some time so I decided to try out the Aspen Open. The course was far more gnar than I was used to and took me awhile to get the hang of, but I kept it mellow in the sub-par weather and somehow managed to beat some dubs and make it into finals (side note-McRae Williams got the most screwed, kid had the sickest, styliest, techest run of them all, but did not make finals. He?ll be winning comps next year for sure, you?ll see). This was the first time I?d ever made it past a qualifying round in a slope, and ended up blowing both my runs in finals. Still got 9th though! When it snowed in Salt Lake, I tried to get after some city features with 4bi9, but the snow was rather scarce, and I ended up just filming more Park City with Paul and Eheath.Slushyparkalisticadillacmusik from Paul Braunstein on Vimeo.Surface/Causwell team afternoon at PC from Evan Heath on Vimeo.I even got to go to The Canyons for a super fun, super slushy, super cloudy day complete with a huge group of homies, a grill, PBR, and Chuck?s epic van.A Day At the Canyons from Paul Braunstein on Vimeo. In the spring, it was back to the school grind, and mellow Park City shredding and coaching. When the end of the semester came, traveling got a bit crazy, I went to Breck for Spring Massive which may have been one of the most fun weekends jam packed with way too much skiing. 2 days after getting back to Salt Lake, I departed for the Orage Masters with the Surface crew, which may have been the wildest few days ever, and easily the most fun competition I have ever been a part of, despite the poor weather. I don?t think I?ve ever screamed as much during a competition, but Matt Margetts definitely got the volume up with his ridiculous frontflip over the hip during the finals. I also hadn?t done a liu kang in awhile, but ended up doing many in our only round of competition (thanks taylor seaton).Surface at the Orage Masters from Evan Heath on Vimeo. After Masters, I took a bunch of finals, wrote some papers, and gave a few presentations to finish up my 2nd to last year of college, only to leave a week after to go to Timberline, OR for the ever-so-fun West Coast Sessions. The weather wasn?t the greatest, but everyone was still shredding like it was bluebird. Once the weather got nice on the 3rd day, I ended up taking a bit of a digger and rocked my head pretty legit. Super bummed because I missed out on an EPIC jump session, but I was stoked because I was able to grab hold of Paul?s 7D (due to his acquiring of ?the sickness? that plagued many at WCS) and capture some of the ridiculousness that ensued. Now I sit in Salt Lake City, on the chill for a few weeks before I head back to Timberline to coach at Windell?s, the funnest place on earth! Stoked to keep the winter going, and hopefully you?ll all be shredding for the summer as well! var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? MANDATORY SKI BREAK: Surface Office

May 12th 2010 - 1 comments

We spent our lunch break out of the Surface office boot packing around Alta, spinning interesting laps and skiing some decent snow, especially for May. Just as we reached the top of Baldy we were lucky enough to witness a group of skier's track out Mt. Superior. After snapping a few photos we skied some nice spring snow down to the parking lot. Sometimes working at the mouth of the the Cottonwood Canyons has its perks. After all, we live the life we work for. var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? 'MERICA Durtschi 2010

May 11th 2010 - 4 comments

I spent the 2010 winter season shredding the cottonwood canyons and local terrain parks in the area. When I wasn?t at Park City lapping the parks, I was out hiking around Grizzly Gulch getting some slack country turns and learning the ways of the backcountry. I?ll definitely be more prepared for next season, allowing for greater adventures into the unknown.Getting Artsy in Grizzly GulchFun!During the evenings, I coached for Axis Freeride at the Olympic Park. With a medium sized jump and lots of low impact rails/boxes, the UOP is the perfect training ground for kids looking to improve their skills. It was very cool to see younger kids learning new tricks and progressing astonishingly fast, I even learned some new stuff with them. It?s definitely the best job to have for the winter season! My favorite day this season was in the beginning of April. Utah was hit with a sizable storm and I got to ski with my olderbrother Tim Durtschi for a day. We were going to ski Alta but due to the amount of snow that in fell Little CottonwoodCanyon, a huge avalanche from Mt. Superior closed the road. Instead of waiting in a long line of cars, we decided to head over to Brighton for an amazing day of trickery into powder and lots of laps on Milly lift. I dropped off a few rocks and small cliffs after Tim, which isn?t something I normally do so it was nice to try something different and push the envelope.Faceshots all day at Brighton!!180 into powAs for competitions this year, I competed in the 4th annual Queen?s Cup Open at Park City. It was very fun and I?m glad I participated in the event. This was my third year attending and I ended up winning it for the second time! Again they held it on Pick n? Shovel it was such a fun event complete with beautiful weather and great people. Because I won, I got the chance to film in the super sweet park shoot, a women's only photoshoot held after the event. But it didn?t go quite as smoothly as anybody would have liked. The weather was very windy and the jump we were supposed to be shooting on in Kings Crown was taken by another group . So we tried to make the best of what we had and filmed some of the features on the top of the run instead. I got a shot doing a sniper tap on a hip with a barrel, its one of my favorite shots I?ve ever gotten on skis. Then we just skied some PC powder the rest of the week, it was great.Sniper tap!Fisheye 540 from Queens CupThis past week I went up to Mt. Hood for a few fun days of skiing at the 4th Annual West Coast Sessions. The turn out was awesome, the features were an absolute blast, and everybody threw down despite the less than favorable weather. But I've learned that that is to be expected when dealing with Timberline. This was the my third West Coast Sessions of the four, I missed last year and am so glad I got to join in on the fun this year! I spent most of my time there hot lapping the park with Carrie Rossman and it was so much fun!4th Annual West Coast SessionWith some downtime at my Mom's house, I decided to work on my season edit. I managed to gather enough shots from the season to make a decent one. I wish I could have gotten more shots of better tricks but those will have to wait for another time. I'm proud of it, mostly because I did all the editing with a little help from friends. I think it's my best yet, but there is still some room for improvement, which is what is so great about this sport, you can always improve on something! Enjoy!Erica Durtschi Skis in 2010 from Erica Durtschi on Vimeo. Now I?m currently in Oregon and I?m not sure what my plans are for the summer. Regardless of what I do, I?ll be making updates on the Surface blog, the Saga blog or my personal blog. So keep looking at those.I?d like to thank Brady Perron, Witt Foster, and Collin Collins, for letting me tag along on various excursions it was so much fun watching them and my new goal is to learn how to land/ski switch in powder, They make it look so easy. Thanks for reading! - Erica "MERICA" Durtschi var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
