The latest photo to go viral on the web is a photo about photos. Lost photos, that is. Earlier today a man named Roland van Gogh shared the above image on Facebook and on Reddit, stating, My father in law found a red Nikon Coolpix camera on 2012-06-20 in the train at the station Amsterdam [...]

Memorable Photographs ? How They Got That Way

by NS_Photography
Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

A friend writes to me: I’m no photographer, and therefore I’ve never understood what makes a photograph amazing? Nationalist sentiments aside, what’s in the photo – “Heroes of Iwo Jima” that makes it so awesome and memorable? Also, the National Geographic Magazine picture – “Afghan Girl“, what’s so special about that? [...]

The Rashomon Effect and My Small-Camera Choice

Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

Way back in the day, when the first mirrorless cameras were released, I was on them like white on rice. I desperately wanted to love, well, any of them: the Sigma DP-1, Panasonic G1, Olympus E-P1, Leica X-1, and more all passed through my hands. Many people loved having a small camera that delivered high [...]

Canon made a splash earlier this month by announcing its first EF pancake lens, the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM. If you’re considering this lens, one thing you should know is that the autofocus noise may interfere with your videos unless you use an external mic. In his review of the lens, photographer Dan Carr writes, [...]

Earlier in the year while surfing through a list of photographers on Google Plus I came across a photograph that grabbed my attention. Iris: A Concept Camera That?s Controlled Using Your Eye

by NS_Photography
Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

Using the human eye to control cameras isn’t a new idea — Canon used to offer eye-controlled focusing in its DSLRs — but designer Mimi Zou‘s Iris concept camera takes the concept one step further by having the camera be entirely controlled by the eye. Shaped like a lens, the photographer uses the camera by [...]

On Saturday night at the United States Olympic trials, sprinters Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh did something the sport had never seen before: tie on camera. Both runners crossed the finished line at exactly 11.068 seconds — see the photo above — and not even the high speed camera capturing 3,000 frames per second at [...]

Dropping Your DSLR Down a Mountain Can Be Bad for Its Health

Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

One of the questions that comes back most often when people learn what I do for a living is: how do you manage not to drop your camera? Up until Saturday, I could (somewhat smugly) answer that I am being very careful and have been lucky so far. Two days ago, I was shooting Heather [...]

Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

Summer X Games 2012 kicks off this week in Los Angeles, California. The entire production takes place in and around the Staples Center and Nokia Theatre. All of the venue's event courses look insane! The designers and builders of this years Summer X Games did an incredible job. The event will feature about nine different courses headlined by a monstrous big air jump, a school yard inspired Street Course, a Skate/BMX Park Course and Rally Car Course through the streets of downtown L.A. You can catch live X Games coverage starting on Thursday, June 28 at 9:00 pm on ESPN2. If you don't have cable or aren't able to sit down in front of a TV, X Games will be streaming live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. You can also build your X Games stoke by downloading the Summer X Games iPhone App. The app allows you to follow all of the action from the convenience of your smart phone. Summer X Games Big Air Jump This years Big Air Jump features a wide take-off and a 55-foot gap. Once on the landing, the athletes will face-off with a quarter pipe that's 27 feet tall and 56 feet wide. Summer X Games Skate and BMX Street Course The 2012 street course was designed to look and feel like an actual school yard. The idea was to make the athletes and spectators feel like they were kids all over again. Almost everyone can relate to a time when they looked into their own school yard and day-dreamed about hitting hand rails, stairs or any other ridiculously fun feature. Summer X Games Skate and BMX Park The 2012 Park course features a tunnel jump, an 11-foot vert corner and 14-foot plexiglas wall ride.

Is Your Browser Color Managed?

by NS_Photography
Jun 25th 2012 - 0 comments

Is your browser color managed? If not, the photographs you are looking at are distorted versions of what their creators intended them to be. Is the rural scene above rendered in autumn colors, or in a ghastly purple? If you’re seeing purple, it means your browser does not respect ICC color profiles. Most browsers today [...]
