Ulleung-Do. A name that few people have ever heard, and rightfully so. Not quite Korea, and not quite Japan, this tiny island exists far from the public view and even further from the rational understanding of what a ski trip should be. Technically it's South Korea. Four hours by boat and endless stomach churning seas separate this volcanic anomaly from any other landmass. Smack dab in the middle of the Sea of Japan, this is the birthplace for the storms that create the now infamous 'Japan-uary' snowfall that skiers and snowboarders from all over the world seek out. Here at the source, storms materialize without warning and have been known to deposit up to two meters of snow in a 24-hour period on the slopes that rise a thousand meters directly out of the blue waters before tumbling back down into an ancient volcanic crater. Essentially a powder paradise perched on a nearly private island and home to a grand total of four skiers. All of whom have roots running five generations back on the island. They sounded like they could use some company and after an invitation to join it seemed like it would be rude not to join them, no?

Classic segment of Mustafa Ceylan. Mustafa skied for the first time at age 15 and quickly became highly passionated about it. As his friends were good skiers and some "pro" skiers, Mustafa wanted to ride almost all the same spots. Pushing himself, try after try, struggling to come out alive of each spot, Mustafa ended up with this memorable video part. This segment was taken from the ski movie "Je vais au rêve (2013)". Please don't be in a big hurry when you drive to and from Mt. Bachelor. If you need to pass, make sure it's safe to do so. Near Sunriver is a rural area. Many driveways and streets intersecting. Both of the people ahead here passed me over double yellows and the second one at a four way intersection to boot! Then came the horses. Hope they learned a lesson the easy way. Next time could be the hard way!

Tony Seibert was an amazing person. Unfortunately on (January 7, 2014) an avalanche in the East Vail Chutes took his life and hurt three others. I loved every moment I spent around Tony and so did his friends and family. He was always so uplifting and caring for others. Everyone I know still greatly misses you Tony and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family today. May you Rest in Peace
