If there's anything that we can say for certain after spending the past three weeks reviewing this year's Superunknown entries, its that the talent pool has never been deeper, and there's more variation in style, influence, and inspiration than ever before. Superunknown XII drew in nearly 100 entries from around the globe- some were all street, others all park. some all pow and big mountain, and others a mix of everything. Figuring out how to compare and judge one against the next was a huge challenge, and while we can?t say that we have the perfect formula, after spending countless hours consulting with athletes, media, and the Level 1 staff and rewetting most of these entries more times than we can count we have a list of 17 Semi-Finalists, and 9 Finalists that we stand behind. We'll be dropping Semi-Finalists all week long, starting with four today. On Friday afternoon we'll kick off the fan poll for you all to choose the 10th spot in Finals, so watch closely, spread the word, and help us figure out who should join the other Finalists in April for a shot at taking home the title! The 14th Annual SuperUnknown contest went off last week at Sierra at Tahoe, bringing together 10 Finalists from around the word, including Chase Mohrman, Ben Zins, Vincent Prevost, Miika Virkki, Siver Voll, Oliver Karlberg, Aleksi Patja, Rory Walsh, Zach Masi, and Sampo Vallotton. In the third of three action-packed edits the sessions continue in the Cali sun, shots are stacked, and decisions are made as a winner is voted! Brought to you by Sierra at Tahoe and Newschoolers.com About SuperUnknown: The original video talent search contest and still the biggest and best! Started back in 2004 as a way to give talented skiers a chance to gain exposure, sponsorship, and a shot at filming with Level 1, SuperUnknownâ„¢ set out to provide an alternate route to exposure outside of the traditional competition scene. Over a decade later the players have changed but the game is still the same- each year Level 1 receives nearly one hundred entries from around the globe from the most skilled and talented amateurs hoping to take the coveted title.
Athlete/artist/designer/musician Sämi Ortlieb has quietly been producing some of the most creative segments in skiing over the past few years, taking his über-well-rounded skill set from the streets to backcountry lines and pow and everything in between. On the tail end of the 2018 season he rounded up a motley crew of riders and shapers to create a park segment unlike anything that’s been done before. Filmed at Gran Masta Park, Adelboden, Switzerland Featuring Sämi Ortlieb, Laurent De Martin, Andrin Tgetgel, Marcel Brünisholz Segment taken from Level 1's featuring film Zig Zag (2018). A lot has changed since we kicked off SuperUnknown back in 2003. Skiing has come a long way- style and technicality has changed, developed, and progressed so far beyond what we could have imagined and commonplace tricks of 2018 hadn’t even been thought of. The landscape of competition, the internet, and video parts is barely recognizable compared to what it once was- but the one constant is that there’s always a crop of talented amateurs around the globe poised for a breakout, and they’re able to use SuperUnknown to take that next step! We’re excited to announce this year’s crop of Finalists who will join us at Winter Park Resort at the end of April. After a week of shredding and shooting, they’ll cast their votes for the winner of the 15th annual SuperUnknown!

In what is undoubtedly the heaviest year Superunknown has seen yet, we?re stoked to announce the 9 Finalists! Once again with over 100 entries pouring in from around the globe, selecting Finalists was no small task, and we?ve spent the past 6 weeks watching, re-watching, and watching them again and again to determine who we think stood out the most. We?ll also be awarding one Wildcard Finalist spot to the winner of the fan poll, chosen by you from our 16 Semi-Finalists: apps.facebook.com/my-polls/superunknownxiwildcard Stay tuned- we?ll be releasing two Finalists each day through Thursday, then releasing the 9th official Finalist and announcing the winner of the fan poll Wild Card spot on Friday, March 28th.

Each of the Finalists were selected on the merits of their qualifying round submissions, where they were asked to submit a 90-second reel showcasing their skills with any available equipment, locations, and resources. We reviewed over 100 submissions, and selecting the best of the best was no small task. Once all the entries were thoroughly reviewed and judged and our Finalists were selected, we shipped them Sony Action Cam kits and gave them a month to produce and shoot an edit- subject matter and content of their choosing. Finalists are being judged and awarded points in 7 categories: technical ability, composition, creativity, motion, use of lighting, overall impression, and crowd vote. For the next 5 days we will release two edits per day. Want to chose your favorites and make your vote count? Check out the contest page apps.facebook.com/my-polls/Filmerunknown2015 (Vote open from March 14 until March 20 at 11:59pm MST) and give your favorite a thumbs up. How are we selecting the winner? In our efforts to make things as fair and transparent as possible, our office staff and production crew will be scoring each category on a scale of 1-10. We?ll also be awarding 10 points for the fan favorite, 9 for the second place-voted edit, 8 points for the third, etc, and factoring these points in with the rest. We?ll then add up all the numbers to determine our winner! The FilmerUnknown winner will receive: ? An all-expense paid trip* to attend Superunknown XII where they?ll work and shoot along with the Level 1 crew. ? $1000 in selected Sony product.
