Red Bull Cold Rush Day 3 Cliffs

by NPF
Mar 2011 - 5.5K views

Like a scene out of the movie Groundhog Day, day three of Red Bull Cold Rush dawned just like the previous two: sunny and blue in the quaint, quiet, and historic Silverton, Colorado. The competition field of 15 men and 6 women ferried out via helicopter to the final venue of this year's Red Bull Cold Rush: the "Cliffs" portion of the competition. Set in "Zone 7" at Silverton Mountain, the venue was comprised of four distinct cliff areas for competitors to choose from. Each skier had two runs and the starting order was reversed for the second run to be sure everyone had a fair chance at a fresh landing.

Sent this cliff a bit too big and landed way too flat but it was a big sucker! This is the largest part of the rock pocket at Big Sky.

When I heard about an old ski resort re-opening after an eight year hiatus, I knew that it would make an interesting story. I had a couple of days open up in my schedule and called around to assemble a last minute crew. What I came up with was a diverse group of skiers: Brody Leven, Giray Dadali and David Wintzer. We arrived to find a sleepy mountain town with generous people, and easy access to a huge, mostly unexplored backcountry. The conditions were tough: these guys skiied lines for the camera that would have made most skiers nervous on a powder day. Stay tuned for the full story coming soon.

My few shots of the big mountain before my GoPro died. During the run I crashed of my last three of a cliff and broke my arm and thumb. I will get some shots from the slopestyle today tonight.

Crystal Mountain JFT Nationals

These are my runs from the 2011 Junior Freeskiing Nationals at Crystal Mountain, Washington. The filmer missed the top part of my run on day 1. That run put me in 3rd place. Last year I saw that feature and decided I wanted to throw a cork 7 off it during my competition run. I went for it but I punch frontfliped out of the trick. This brought me down to 13th place in the overall standings. I still had a great time and Team Summit killed it!! We took 1st and 2nd place in the 15-17 Boys category. Crystal Mountain was awesome!! Thanks to Team Summit, my coaches, Jason Anthony and Ryan Van Nuys, Smith Optics, Faction Skis, and Backcountry Access.
