Photographs capture moments in time. Although all moments in time are equally significant, some photographers capture those moments and illuminate them in such a way that the photo transcends the confines of a photo album or hard drive and demands additional attention. When a photographer does this exceptionally well, he or she may publish their work and in some very rare instances define an era. For example, the below photo depicts a moment in time in the Vietnam era:Eddie Adams PhotoAlbeit hundreds of thousands of photos were taken during Vietnam, this particular photo makes appearances in text books, war documentaries, and countless dissertations. Given that the photo serves as a shocking reminder of the war, it can be considered an iconic image of the era.On the grand scheme of historical influence, ski photography is less likely to end up in text books and dissertations than photos of Vietnam. However, for those of us that have dedicated tremendous financial, chronological, and physical effort to the lifestyle, certain photos and certain photographers have come to define an era, the era of contemporary skiing (Blake Nyman?).At Surface, Jason Eichhorst, Adam Clark, and Ian Matteson have continued to capture phenomenal images of skiing and the lifestyle that inspires everyone at our brand. An integral foundation of our online media, print catalogs, posters, and desktop backgrounds, they have always had an eye to produce unique shots of our lives throughout the winter. Regardless of their location, Clark, Eichhorst, and Matteson create astonishing images of skiing and we have the utmost respect for their work.Zion. Ian MattesonSkier: Ian Wade. Brighton Slackcountry. Photo Jason Eichhorst."This was my second winter focusing on ski photography and it was an amazing learning experience. So much effort goes into one moment, when broken down, is captured within 1/1000 of a second, or less. One moment frozen completely that blurs with your memory and vision for the rest of your life. I really feel that no matter how much schooling you receive for photography, the mountains will humble you in every way. It's both frustrating and completely rewarding. I absolutely love it! I can't wait to see what's possible again next for season. Always looking forward to new adventures." - Jay Eichhorst
Heule BOOSTING. Matt Harvey PhotoRob dropping a dub flat 9 at the WSI Superhit competition. Geoff Jansen Photo.Rob Heule slays! Hailing from Calgary, AB, the young Canadian honed his skills at the Calgary Olympic Park which hosts a superpipe with 22ft walls, a handful of rails, and a few very small jumps. Given the lack of terrain in Calgary, it is amazing to see Rob's superpipe prowess. On Tuesday, his hard work and dedication paid off with a gold medal at the WSI Superhit Competition. Rob joins a host of top pros that won the WSI Superhit including: David Crichton, Andreas Hatviet, Simon Dumont, Mike Riddle, Tucker Perkins, and Matt Philippi.
The Orage Masters 2010 has came and gone. Once again, Orage hosted an awesome event full of good times, laughs and hangovers. The Surface Dead Heads skied their asses off and despite some shady judging (sorry, someone had to say it) were unable to move onto to the next round. Our team this year consisted of Banks Gilberti, John Ware, Jeff Kiesel and Dania Assaly... all of whom, couldn't have skied better. Big ups to Orage for hosting the athletes, Ian Matteson for the photo updates and Evan Heath for manning the video camera. Can't wait to see some footage of the chaos otherwise known as the Orage Masters. Until next year.
The Surface Dead Heads were out in full force today in Whistler for the Orage Masters. All athletes got to spend some much needed time on the course in preparation for tomorrows event. Everyone was killing it today. Tomorrow is gonna go off for sure. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow as the event kicks off. Hopefully hippies worldwide will be throwing off the good vibes for the Surface crew. Until then, sleep tight.
The Surface boys stroll around the Whistler Village on a beautiful sunny day... livin' is easy!

It's that time of year again. Time to load the car and head to Whistler for the Orage Masters Invitational. This year we are going up against brands like K2, Salomon, Armada and more... Each team must choose a theme and costume for the event. This season we are going as a bunch of 1960's Dead Heads with the theme "STEAL YOUR FACE." The 2010 Masters Team consists of BANKS GILBERTI, JEFF KIESEL, JOHN WARE AND DANIA ASSALY. Stay tuned to this blog for updates and don't forget to get over to the Orage site and VOTE FOR SURFACE !!!
