A little over a month ago, Ski the East recently launched their new website at www.skitheeast.net. Started by Geoff McDonald and Chris "Rooster" James (with Mike Rogge joining the mix this year), SkitheEast is quickly becoming a hub for news, forums, events and weather for the East Coast skier. The freshly revamped site includes... Click here to read the full entry.

I've never skied in October. Last Friday, that was a true statement. Today, it's a lie. Mount Snow in Southern Vermont spun it's first lifts of the 2009/2010 ski season this past Saturday, October 17th. While not offering a top to bottom run or "epic" conditions by any means, it certainly wet the appetite of many who were in attendance. By many, I mean upwards of 400+ people, mostly kids in mostly tall tees packed an estimated 200 yard by 350 yard expanse that provided enough snow and slope to set up a dozen features. While it may seem like I'm selling Mount Snow short, I'm not. Where talking skiing, on snow, in October. Click here to read the full entry.

With most great ideas, they start over a beer. Months back, I was introduced to Russell Martin by a mutual friend at a local Burlington, VT bar. During conversation, I found out that Russell owned and operated a boutique clothing company that specialized in collaborative designs between artists. That company is Imag3. The result: Using a photo that I shot while covering the Jon Olsson Super Sessions in Sweden last April, Russell was able to create a pretty dope tshirt. Here's a few images from a shoot I was on for Cabot Cheese this week in Waterbury & Rochester, VT. Vermont will always be the place to go for great Fall scenes. The #SkiShow

Mike Rogge is making another appearance on this blog as he's been recently hosting an internet radio show on www.wbkm.org called "The Ski Show." Occurring every Tuesday night from 9-11 P.M. EST. Now three shows deep, Rogge's been adding listeners consistently and the production behind it keeps getting better; last night he debuted a plethora of prerecorded promos and had WBKM's first ever live call ins. "Digi" Dave Amirault from Freeskier Magazine called to chat gossip, ski news and recant a number of shared adventures, namely crashing the magazine's FJ Cruiser while returning from the XGames. Least I forget, IF3's own JF Durocher also debuted a new segment, "Canada News" which featured all the latest from America's "loft apartment." Click here to read the full entry.

Andreas Wvoorl One of the nice things about being a part of the online network of Twitter is "following" a bunch of interesting people & companies. While some can argue that it's got a horrible conversion rate (supposedly many people who sign up don't last thirty days with it), I've actually had a great experience with it and have found it a very great resource. One of those resources is Michael Zhang of Petapixel (@petapixel). He recently posted this link about how to overcome "photographer's block." Today, I took that "100 step" challenge listed on the Photocritic blog. "The 100 step challenge is one I’ve promoted here on Photocritic before – because it’s one of those things I’ve found work incredibly well indeed. It’s easy: Grab your camera, and start walking. Count your steps. After 100 steps, stop where you are, and where you’re standing, you have to take a photograph."

While having a beer, he showed me the finished product of many a carpool conversation that we had on the 30 miles south to Waterbury from Burlington and back again: a limited edition, hand bound, 14 page book of his poetry. 10 poems are included in the edition from Tim Barcomb & Plowboy Press. The poetry itself is reminiscent of William Carlos Williams, draped in the Imagist diction. "Winter," being my favorite, is featured above. Last weekend I made my way North, way North to the town of Lac Beauport for the Acrobatix Le Freeski Jam sponsored by DStructure. Surrounded by francophones, poutine and an appreciation of Celine Dion, I watched pro and amateur skiers hit the water ramps for the day.

MY FIRST (ski) PHOTO

Recently I've been updating my library of images. It's a process to say the least and I'm finding that I wish I had done things differently at the start (read: add keywords!). However, it has presented me the chance to take a look back at the photos I've shot in the past and see how much I've (hopefully) grown as a photographer. In doing so, I've stumbled across one of the first shots that I took of a skier. It was my first time photographing anything outside of family snapshots with a disposable kodak and was certainly a point that I decided I wanted to keep getting better at it. mike wilson (sponsored by line at the time of the photo), loon mtn, nh And of course, being an amateur at the time, I didn't save the negatives so this chopped up jpeg sitting on one of my hard drives is the only copy. While not a great image, it is my first.

I've returned from a relaxing weekend on Nantucket despite the hectic nature of Figawi. For my second trip to the island, both of which were during the Figawi yacht race, it was nice to slip away from the crowds in the center of town and explore the periphery; enjoying a more even pace of surfing (despite the lack of waves) and skateboarding (despite my non-skateboarding) and great food & friends. Here's a few pictures from the weekend (more to come!)
