Part 1 of our 3 part web series Room For Improvement. After the new year Tahoe faced down one of the most impressive Januarys on record with numerous atmospheric rivers dumping millions of gallons of rain and almost 300 inches of snow on the peaks around Squaw Valley and Tahoe City. In between storms the Janky crew enjoyed some of the best conditions the area has seen in 6 years, capitalizing on amazing storm skiing and a few cold sunny days. Featuring Anthony Santos, Eli Sobel, Pete Kukesh, Jed Kravitz, Andrew Putnam, Hazen Woolson, Aaron Bushey, and Henry Holdsworth. Despite a lackluster snow year, late in the winter of 2018 some of the crew got together in their backyard of Utah to check off a few Wasatch classic spots as well as spend a bit of time exploring new terrain for the winters to come . Also shedding a light upon what makes the Utah backcountry such a hotspot for all of these ski and snowboard crews and what has made so many people call this place their home. Enjoy!

On the evening of July 21st my roommate Justin and I set out for Lassen Volcanic National Park. Hoping to find some good snow we camped out the first night and made our way over to the peak on the morning of the 22nd. Shortly after we began hiking up the peak trail we were swarmed by tens of thousands of California tortoise-shell butterflies. We spent the rest of the hike admiring the scenery and the mass amounts of butterflies. One of the park rangers told us that the butterflies had migrated to the area in order to pollinate some of the flowers growing on the volcano. The entire experience was surreal. We eventually scrambled over to the Northeast face of the peak and skied down through an endless cloud of butterflies. We finished the day with a few more miles of hiking before setting up camp again for the night just under the peak.

Over the past year I have made the switch out of my 13 year racing career and spent my first season dedicated to freesking. April 30th on the summit of Hood. Up pearly gates and over to old chute to ski. Thought I knew about skiing solid ice being from NH but the Old Chute taught me otherwise. Stoked to have puckered my way down it regardless. Perfect corn skiing from Illumination Rock all the way back to Timberline, not a bad way to spend a birthday.
Kept it mellow at low low pass while the snowpack heals up high. 2 days of stumpjumping to keep warm in the frigid temps. fun stuff.

We cleared a 30 by 60 ft hole in the ice so we could rope swing in February. We used pick axes to make the hole. Please don't replicate, it is not safe.

Had to opportunity to travel to Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, this February to ski deep pow. Awesome trip full of snowy days, eclectic characters and lots of laughs.
