Renegade Story Continued

by 4FRNT
Jan 25th 2010 - 6 comments

Well here they are!     After three weeks of hard work almost every day the first run of 6 pairs of the Renegades are complete.   The majority of the trip to the 4FRNT HQ was spent setting up all the fixtures required to produce skis in house for the future. We only went to Home Depot a dozen times, Isle 17 fixtures, Ha, Ha....   We renovated the press from alignment pins, form blocks and bolster tube assembly all the way to the pneumatic rams and regulators that control the airbag inflation pressure.    We also had to set up, extend and dial in the die cut press machine and had dies built to cut out the P-tex bass material. This was a substantial project in it self.   I built a steel work bench/bandsaw table/ Mcgivered drum sander finishing side grinder assembly out of old steel shelving units stacked behind the office, reused materials and 50 trips to the Bolt center shop down the road.   Cody Hard at work.   I feel that I really have learned a lot about ski building and what is involved to produce high quality hand built skis. This experience will definitely be applied to future productions of the renegade and prototyping beyond that....     I would like to Thank:   Matt Sterbenz, Bob Boice, Endre Hals, Cody Barnhill, Steele, Jeremy, Parker, the rest of the 4FRNT crew, Alta resort, Sid's ski Shop in SLC, Jeff & Dave at The Tune Shop in Banff for all the help and effort to make this project possible!

Russia cancelled..

Comp in russia got canceled due to unstable snow-conditions and bad weather. Still had a blast today though, charging russian forests like there was no tomorrow. But there is, and at two pm my flight back to europe is leaving from Sochi. First stop is Moscow, then Frankfurt, Munich and finally Chamonix for the next stop of the tour. Since there was no comp in russia, there will be two held in chamonix, at two different venues. Weather forecast for france says shitty weather is due to come, so no surprises for new cancellations I guess. Pics! Landing in Moscow   Hotel. Pool and a sauna is nice for down days   Sochi saturday celebrating. Girls didn't seem to mind the bad forecasts       Kaj and Reine enjoying russian powder   Earlier this week was really nothing to get overexcited about.

Arrived in Russia, all my luggage included and are currently sitting in the hotel lobby catching up with the rest of the world. Krasnaja really put my gore-tex to the test yesterday as it was pouring down, even at the very top at 2200 meteres. Weather-forecast don't really look to promising, but the one thing I learned about the weather-forecast lately is that it doesn't really forecast the weather, so things can still turn out o.k. Comp will most likely happen this weekend as the reports say there could be some sun.  Today was bib-draw, and I drew 27. Pretty late but I dont think these conditions favourises an early start, so it's all good Going skiing in Krasnaja Polyana. No joke!

Holidays...and life after high school.

Jan 18th 2010 - 0 comments

Well, its been a while since i've logged on here...i've been more than busy the past couple months. After summer camp in Whis it was pretty much straight back to school. This past fall semester was my last semester of high school- luckily i had gotten a few extra credits here and there my first three years, allowing me to graduate in December instead of May. Because of this, though, i had to take a few extra classes this year and was so busy with work that i really had no time to travel. As soon as snow started comin, however, it was time to start slacking and get away from the highschool hubbub. So i went to Montana to visit my brother Taven and enjoy Thanksgiving.   The trip started on November 20th, which happened to be my 18th birthday. I knew there was no better way to spend my 18th than in Reno, so as soon as school got out my buds Ramsey and Thomas packed themselves into ye ol' Lesbo Cruiser (my Subaru Forester, of course) and we headed out.  This Grimey person here is Ramsey: And this is thomas. Yeah, they like to party. I, of course, do not indulge in any of their lude activities or performances.  Reno was very radical. That night also included the Warren Miller premier, which was a totally huge turnout and a super cool thing to be a part of. I didn't film with them too much last year so i only got a few shots in the final product, but the whole experience of going on stage and just generally being a part of Warren Miller stoked me out for the season. Tanner also happened to show and gave a little speech about the Lawsuit situation, preaching peace and equity among the ski community. I totally agree- there is absolutely no reason for there to be any beef whatsoever between ski companies or film companies...aren't we all here to ski and have a good time? Its a little sad to see a financial-based problem occuring in the ski realm, but as the sport grows, it seems to me irrelevant to bypass corporate beef...simply put, if there is a money making scheme goin on, there will be problems between competitors. After the premier, we dropped in for a DormStorm at UNR...always fun.  The 21st of november we drove. All day. The road from Tahoe to Bozeman is a long and treacherous one, especially after a Reno Experience, but we made it there soon enough... actually around 4 in the morning. Upon arrival, we caught a glimpse of the legendary Haggard Beast, at home in the wilderness of Montana. These creatures are rarely glimpsed, but fortunately for us their main habitat is the college campus in Bozeman. This lovely specimen goes by the name of Taven Anderson. yup, thats my brother- he recently turned 21. Anyways- That was pretty much thanksgiving for me. We spent the week in Bozeman, shredded a little bit, ate some great food, and caught up with our friends. Hands down, the best thanksgiving i've had to date, but my camera broke and i got zero photos, which blew.  After thanksgiving it was back to California to finish up school for good. The last few weeks were pretty gnar, but luckily i made it through successfully with good scores and whatnot. I will not be missing highschool whatsoever. Since I graduated, i have taken 4 days off from skiing- out of thirty. Basically i've been nonstop ripping and training for the upcoming comps and shoots that i plan on participating in. I like to spend december and january in tahoe because it gives me a chance to gather myself and recover from school- going out to CO super early season never seems to be as fun as i think it will be...and when you aren't having fun, you arent skiing well.  One thing i started doing this year that i always wanted to do is skinning up peaks. My first little peak i ascended was on New Years Eve- just a tiny little mountain that is directly off highway 50 on your way up to Sierra-At-Tahoe. Last year in Norway i bought a pair of skins that would fit my CRJ's and never really got a chance to test them out until this adventure. I went with two of my friends who were also virgins at climbing.  This is Luke and Patrick at the trailhead. As you can tell, our equipment was just as amateur as we are. You may also notice that they are snowboarders. I don't really ski with skiers too much- shredding with boarders opens my mind to different creative tricks and lines.  Just a little self portrait i took before the real climbin started. As you can see im pretty stoked. I've always wanted to get out into the backcountry- no patrollers, no ropes, no rules. You can get as gnar as you want, and also get bucked harder than ever. It's an entirely different world than resort skiing.  Midway Cheerio break. Luke's stoked.  When its too steep to skin, we hike. There is no better way to realize your out of shape.  Heres me, just before dropping in. That's highway 50 in the background...watching cars drive by and standing up there is one hell of a reality check...made me realize there is so much more skiing to be done than just park and rails and general manufactured skiing. Upon dropping in, i got a huge gust of self-fulfillment and stoke. The pow was still pow, 3 days after getting sunbaked every single day. So deep, so soft, and remarkably not Sierra Cement.  Walking down highway 50 after skiing. I was more stoked than ever. I see this day as a huge leap in skiing for me- although it was a small peak, with no exposure and miniture features, it was my first time earning my turns without the added advantage of a ski lift to help me. So much fun, so soul. When i'm 60 and to broken to jump, this is all im gonna do.  As soon as we were done, it was time for New Years in South Lake. If you ever get a chance to go to Tahoe for New Years, do it. It is...insane.   This is the only photo i acquired from New Years- in the parking lot of Sierra at Tahoe getting ready for another day of pow. Contrary to popoular belief, i was not hungover. As i said earlier, i am only 18, and that would be illegal.  Well, those were my holiday experiences, hope everybody out there reading this had just as good of a time. The next two weeks are gonna have a whole bushel of updates- We're getting 10 feet of snow out here between today and next weekend...so stoked. I have a backcountry shoot planned in the next couple days as well...so keep looking for that. I've also been filming a little park edit...should be pretty radical i think.  Keep shreddin, yall.

Quiksilver Slovenia freeski tour - slopestyle winner

Jan 18th 2010 - 0 comments

It's good to progress in skiing, but to have an impact on other kid's progression is way cooler Last weekend i won the first stop of Quiksilver Slovenia freeski tour which is a series of events through the season only for slovenian kids to meet the freeskiing world and progress in skiing through events like these. I can't be more proud to see kids jumping on kickers bigger than on most contests. Even if they can't reach the double cork level, they still keep up with style and confidence to hit the course with flat up-rail, 16m and 15m kicker in the line.flat rail is fun if you fly out of itloads of airtimes made me do easier tricks with steezerepresenting 4frnt MSP skis...they're true killin machinesand always good to have photos with groupies ;)Next on is Gloryfy bastards invitational event in Zillertal (25m kicker...plenty airtime) stoooked!

Another Relapse

After playing a successful role of Santa in my family's Christmas party I felt like it was time to stand on a pair of skis again. First nearby my home, and then on a local hill. I decided to take it easy and took some really smooth and slow turns, didn't go into the woods and didn't do any jumps or rails either. It was really a mellow day. Because of my knee I didn't ski better than an average recreational skier, but I still enjoyed it like any day on skis.  I got back home and noticed that my bad knee was a little sore (or a bit more sore than it usually is), which was a surprise because I had really skied as calmly as I could. I went to see my doctor just two days later, but no clear reason for my slow recovery emerged. Now I'm under medication that might help, but it seems like the process of getting back to slopes, not to mention back to winning competitions, is longer than expected.  This winter was supposed to be dedicated to skiing full-time, now it's dedicated to rehab again. I graduated from high school in September so I can't even study. I spend my time mainly in gym and on Internet. A year ago I made a new year's promise to read more, so I also have a couple of books worth checking out, like Ian Kershaw's Hitler-biography, which my daddy gave me as a Christmas present. And then I have a girlfriend, who has kept me sane during all these bitter injuries. I don't really have other friends outside of the skiing world besides her. One thing on web made me really happy yesterday. A couple of ski-buddies of mine will be releasing series of edits this season. The project is called Nipwitz, which according to them means nothing. However, the guys managed to make me more than proud of them, skillful and creative skiing with the right attitude. That's definitely something I would do if only... http://www.vimeo.com/8723496

Travel diary from France

Red Bull Linecatchers... Vars, France... what an event! This has been someof the most fun I have had in the last five years. Since I first got thecall about the opportunity to do this event, I committed and things havebeen so fortunately falling into place. The vibe started good, got betterand better, and was climaxing as the contest portion was unfolding. Thishas been such an amazing experience and I am thankful that I had theopportunity to do the event. I flew into Marseille, France and timed my sleeping well on the flight. When I arrived I felt no jet lag and even was feeling good. We drove forquite some hours, up a long river valley only to take a turn up an othervalley for two more hours, and arrived at our hotel. I have never been toVars and have blown away the entire time I have been here. The mountainstower about the valleys, coming to sharp tips in a jagged range. Thebeauty of my surroundings impresses me. The day after we arrived we had the opportunity to ride the mountain andscope the venue from the bottom. When we arrived to the top of the highestchair and looked up, as the contest venue towered hundred of meters aboveus, I was taken back by the beauty and inspiration. There were so manyfeatures and almost every one of them had a jump built on top of it. Theshape and features of the mountain provide amazing opportunity to hostsome of the highest levels of skiing. Instantly I am inspired to do thethings I imagine in my mind. We rode the lift under the venue for the morning and afternoon. There werekiller wind lips, rock features, and drops to play on. We got the shred onand got to practice some tricks. I was having a great time but not pullingoff the tricks as well as I would hope. None the less, I practiced until Iwas feeling them and rode away from the day feeling good about my riding. The next day we woke up to fresh snow and clear skies. The window ofopportunity came for us, on the second day of being in town. Now the compis real, and I know I am really ready. I was suppose to met at the bottomof the lift at 7:30 am. Pulling my show together I was running late andshowed at 7:50, with no one waiting at the lift. I figured this much so Irode up to the top solo. As I rode the lifts up, the sun was on its way upand was turning the sky brilliant colors. As I reached the top, andstarted my hike to the top I ran into my friend Matti on his way up. Helooks around and says to me, "What a powerful energy. This is a good vibe." Running into Matti and easily acknowledging the truth and power of hiswords was just the next step of my trip coming to be so amazing. Matti andI hiked to the top, speaking on good vibes and great days in life. As wereached the top, faces of perfect powder awaited us. I had picked out my line the day before and as I stood on top of it theexcitement multiplied. As mellow and great the vibe has been the anxietyof competition began to grow. I planned on skiing one line and betteringmyself each run. My first run went just as planned and I felt really goodabout it. On my second run I went to better my top jump by trowing a right360 opposed to my first left 3. I crashed off of the top jump on this run,but knew with an other chance I would stomp it. I went back up to the top for my third run. The wind had picked up and itstarted getting colder. The elements were trying to wear on my nerves abit, but I kept a clear mind and stayed mellow. I dropped in on my thirdrun and stomped the right 3 off of the top jump. On the bottom jump Istomped a cork 7 and rode away from the line I had envisioned for myselfto do well and ski my best. As I came across the finish line I rose myhands to the sky and gave thanks. My run had landed my in 3rd place, andwhat a BEAUTIFUL day in life it was. I had trained day after day getting ready for this event. I have beenskiing stronger than I have in many years, and to come out here andcapitalize on my talent and hard work has really been a blessing. I givethanks for the opportunity to do the event, and for the inspiration inlife to pursue my passion...skiing. RASpect

Red bull Linecatcher 2010 in Vars part 1

by 4FRNT
Jan 14th 2010 - 0 comments

Last week i got an oportunity to ride on the world's biggest freestyle backcountry event in Vars great mountains at 7 amEvent like the Redbull Linecatcher is the ultimate in our sport. The mix between freestyle skiing and the mountains is one of the kind and the hardest thing in skiing. For this kind of skiing the athlete needs to be in top shape, he needs to be aware of avalnches and risk with skiing in these terrains. It takes so much skills to bring all those tricks from park into big ountain area and get away with clean runs without big falls between rocks on a steep face. That is why top skiers from all over the world took place in Vars and offered the show to the public. Sage-Cattabriga Alonsa, Cr Johnson, Candide Thovex, Anthony Boronowski, Sean Pettit, Tim Durtchi, Richard Permin, Jp Auclair,...were just the few names of great riders...Tanner Hall broke his tibias and both knees in the spring and after 5 surgeries he was judging in his words 'the best event in the season'My team mate Cr Johnson shoved me what's up and at the end took 3rd place..Respect bredda!!!After the first day of shreding 1m of new layer of powder on 2m of base and scooping the line for qualis, i was pretty much lost what to do and how to get down as big as i can or i can't. That is why it was really important for me to take photo of the face and figure out the way. On the photo everything looks so easy and small but when you are out there...different story...going through my line over and over...interviews were the event's dark side...when you are there you just want to ski...nothing elseminutes before the first quali drop...can you see the line from here? i guess sohiking kept us warm from freezing...-22 degrees at 7 amQualifications were heavy. Such a good skiing on the Europa's highest level offered a great show to the public. 12 riders and almost 24 different lines were the point of redbull Linecatcher. We killed the face and had a smile on our faces whole day long. After qualifications only 2 spots were open for the finals. I couldn't better than Victor and Leo so i had to please myself with only side-watching the finals. In my opinion i did a good job. Did the double set cliff, some small jumps and 360 over the windlip in the first run and big 360 over the cliff and the big bottom cliff where i expected harder impact on landing. I am happy with this performance on my first ever freestyle/bc event and stoked to get back here next year!Hucking the bottom cliff and landing it easy with new CRJ 180's

Oppdal ?Powder?-edit

Jan 12th 2010 - 0 comments

Oppdal ”Powder”-editHowdy!I leave for the Alps pretty soon to do some filming with Field Productions, hopefully we will find better (and more) snow there than we have back home in Oppdal.Still it is possible to find some good snow, especially in the upper slopes in Vangslia. My buddy Tore Meirik, who works for Oppdal Ski Resort, hooked us up with a snowmobile-lift to the top (thanx to lift-manager Knut!), so we did this season´s first run down to the classic Skarbekkdalen ravine.Despite having to dodge sharkfins and dealing with a rockhard landing, we managed to get some god turns. Tore filmed some shots with his Contour HD helemtcam, and made this little edit. I think he feels pretty lucky to finally get a chance to make a ski-edit with Neil Young music!I guess the skiing and editing ain´t  too much to brag about, but this was the best we got today. That´s what so great about skiing; It´s always fun!I will be stayng home in Oppdal the rest of this week, then it´s off to Central-Europe. And after Europe it is time for Alaska! Hopefully I will get time to update a little more often then.Enjoy the edit and keep charging!-EirikPS! Check out next season ´s clothes from Helly Hansen in the edit!    http://vimeo.com/8695188

Alps, revisited

by 4FRNT
Jan 5th 2010 - 0 comments

First day in the Alps over with sun, powder and flamboyant conditions. Today was day one of the sweet-catalogue shoot and because Norwegian Airlines managed to mess with our luggage again, just like last year, we had to stay close to Münich airport to pick up some more skis tomorrow. Bummer. No worries for us with skis though, there's no lack of good resorts. Snow-reports says a massive snow-storm is gonna hit us hard on Thursday and plan is to head south tomorrow night. Switzerland's got the best base, but no need for big mountains till the storm settles so let's try try to find some tree-skiing till then. Christmas was spent back home with epic conditions at Lemonsjøen. Trollhø huckers recruit-team, second to none, charging harder than ever and helping us all remember we're not getting younger.. Hope you all had a happy new year. We're off for some schnitzels, but I'll be back with some pics and hopefully more reports on soft european powder. Just the way we like it!

Jib Jam in Kranjska Gora

Dec 30th 2009 - 0 comments

Rail event in Kranjska Gora  was the first event in Slovenia so far and a place to be for me! setup...i'm not really a fan of rails but i came here to show what i've learned in past few years on the street. i don't practice rails much in the parks, because i rather hit some jumps or shred some pow. So usualy i go on the streets and film rails. My first street rail i ever hit was the one in Planica (44 stairs, wooden crooked rail, remember?) and the next day in Kranjska Gora (double kink, narrow, steep, iron steps on bith side). So i was happy to see a sweet down rail and a flat down box before event started.Even if the season is not fully on...actually is not on at all because of lack of snow, i was surprised that so many people actually came to shred and support freeskiing. Many of riders were at home watching movies, eating pies or whatever but still...we had fun!afternoon practiceit was cool for me to warm up on box before hitting the railAfter 1.5 hour of jam session riders decided who will take home 250euros and some sweet stuff form 69slam and others. I guess my style was appreciated so i won the first contest of the season. I like!

Director's Cut Contest

by 4FRNT
Dec 12th 2009 - 1 comments

Check this out. We want you guys to edit our video commercials! Ever watched a commercial on TV, and thought, “I could do that!” Well, we’re giving you a chance to become a star. Edit and direct a commercial about 4FRNT skis, and why people should ride them, and you could walk away with some new skis and your name in lights (or at least in the credits on a DVD). We’ll give you some video clips to get started, then all you have to do is put together the most creative and compelling 30 second commercial you can. The winners will be voted on by your peers, and we’re going to be giving away some gear to the best ones. The Grand Prize: a brand new pair of 4FRNT skis, along with having your commercial featured on the 4FRNT Web site and in the special features of some of next year’s ski movies. Everyone in the top 10 will get some 4FRNT shirts, hats or hoodies, too.Be creative! Anything goes as long as it doesn’t involve profanity, nudity or anything else that could be considered in poor taste (we’ll be the final judge of that, but if you wouldn’t show it to your parents, you may not want to give it to us). The deadline is January 15th for entries, but we will open the contest for entries starting on December 18th.Download the video clips for the commercial here (right click then "Save File As"). There are also the official rules and legal jargon. You should read that too.
