It's about that time of year again, it almost feels like closing time, the snow is sadly melting and flower are popping up, but we still have a lot of skiing left. Here in Oppdal, MegaPark more or less just finished and everybodey was throwing down like expected, it was good to watch Espen Berg more or less rock the national slopestyle comp. For us who live here the funtime is now, the same park and no people. I have to say I missed some american presence this year, but we hold our own!My knee is feeling better if enyone is wondering, but I have decided to operate so I can return in full strength. I still have fun though, you know it's skiing!!!erik
So on Saturday i went up to Sugarbowl to to this competition entitled TRAINS, put on by High Fives and Volkl. They had this 70 ft death gap jump that no one could get speed for, but it was a rad comp regardless. The idea was that you had teams of five- one girl (captain) and four dudes. Courtney Royce was my CAP'N, and then it was Chris Logan, Jason Arens, Kyle Smain, and myself. We were all supposed to hit the feature at the same time, but....that didnt really work. The in-run was about 500 yards long with two turns in it- no speed whatsoever. I'm pretty sure no one fell into the actual death gap but a few definately got close...double ejectiles on the knuckle for sure. No hate! Suuuuuper fun competition though, had a blast chillin with the Electric crew...im pretty sure we had the whole Am team out there...Parker, Chris, Casey Cruiger, and myself. Heres a little photo of Chris and I Trainin- I think he did a five? i dunno i did a flat 3? Whatever...basically we did not win but had a bunch of fun losing. SO thanks ROY for puttin it on....and heres the video- im in the yellow pants...think theres a shot of like a nine and a five in there...not too sure. [video:http://vimeo.com/10855111 600x450] The next day, sunday, i just chilled at home and put my head in the books. Today- just another pow day in April! yeaaaaaaaaaaa so much fun. Here's a few shots on the SKI Magazine website from some random pow day i had in the past. http://www.skinet.com/ski/scenery-shots/2010/04/deep-into-spring?pnid=108617#gallery-content If you click next or previous theres a few more. That's all for today- tomorrows another epic powpow day. PEACE!
This last weekend was a good one, i must say. Friday- Woke up in Reno, went to UNR campus, signed up for Campus Rail Jam tour. Won that, collected cash. by the way if anyone wants to buy some coreupt TJ's (163)...hit me up at finnanderson4@hotmail.com ........ Saturday- Woke up in reno, went to the CalNeva and got that 3.99$ steak and egg breakfast- delicious. Drove to Sierra-At-Tahoe for a photoshoot on this massive hip they built. When we got there TransWorld was still finishing up shooting Eero Ettala and Heiki Sorsa- PROS! Eventually we got started- pretty big hip- i'd claim maybe 75 feet long? Not too poppy, but super fun...started warmin up my 270s...by the end of the night i got the distance and height mark- beat Eero on that one, stoked. Hopefully we got some rad shots, haven't seen any yet but im sure they turned out well. Sunday, i took a day off... Monday- one of the best pow days of the year. Soooo good, couldnt stop to film for more than one run, but nonetheless- here's that one run...and a little jib from yesterday i liked- enjoy. [video:http://www.vimeo.com/10760747 600x400]
During the past week in Finland the temperatures rose up, birds began to tweet and snow started to melt much faster than many expected. I also decided to wake up from my blogging hibernation and do at once what I should have done in many separate blogs. Despite the fact that I couldn't ski properly, I wasn't completely out of the game. In late February me and Matti Räty arranged a freeski camp for hungry Finnish juniors at Tahko, Finland. Temperatures were freezing but we managed to survive and everyone was stoked, as always. My coaching was mainly theoretical, I skied as little as possible, while Matti took care of the practical side and showed the kids how everything's done. Matti signing. Kids were crazy on some free stickers, t-shirts and poles we had to offer. Definitely some potential 4FRNT buyers. After the camp I offered my help to the Nipwitz film crew. They were shooting in Kuopio and needed a lot of man power to build some massive urban features. From left to right me, Tommi Kostilainen and Oskari Raitanen. Throwing snowballs on the wall. Matti went huge on this! Shoveling that landing was a hell of a work. I don't even know how many hours it took. The Inrun turned out to be too tricky and it was impossible to clear the gap. No shots. Another special feature. Check Nipwitz 3 on http://www.vimeo.com/10550015. You may also find out a little CR Johnson tribute.
yo matt here is that new vid if you want to throw it on the site or somethin.... http://vimeo.com/10664323
my version of TransWorld's five trick fix...lately i've been working on this edit im making for Sierra-At-Tahoe...im doing a spring edit for every ski resort i go to this spring...Sierra is the first, and my home mountain. Anyway, heres a little tease for yall- just ten clips from filming the past week or so. Some of this will be used for the edit, some wont, but it's all good i think so i'm pretty stoked....keep in mind i didn't really edit at all just put a song to some clips and saved it as an MPEG-4 instead of high quality. Just pumped her out in like two hours this afternoon. So, here we go, hope you enjoy, stay pumped for the final product- should be really good. [video:http://vimeo.com/10447797 500x400]
with my friends from 1080 ski community Slovenia we had a cool day...filmed couple of runs just like that, just for fun [video:http://www.vimeo.com/10372739 400x225]
Just got fired up on a twitter account.... follow me throughout the rest of the winter with day to day updates. just posted a new video clip from a recent Level 1 shoot here in Utah... cHECk iT! http://twitter.com/WileyMiller
So on sunday i was just chillin, cruisin the park, you know. Endin up meetin up with my buddy Spencer to get a little shreddin done in the medium oark at Sierra. We took the camera out for about an hour and a half or so...probably 5 or 6 runs. Endin up havin a lot of fun just cruisin- it was super good to film for just a tiny portion of the day rather than all 6 or 7 hours like its been (workin on an edit for Sierra right now). Anyway, he sent me a text tonight telling me he put a little edit up on youtuber. Some of the shots arent really that sick cause you know...cant do everything raddly all the time. Theres actually a really funny shot at the end- tried to do a switch 5050 and ate it....hard. havent hit my mouth on a rail in a while. SO here she is boys and girls. enjoy! [video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqt8nsU56dM 500x500]
So the other day i was filming a little bit with my bud hinderman trying to make a little spring edit at Sierra and we got a little buck on one run. I dropped in on the upper half of the run and everything went swell until the last jump- overshot that badboy to the flats...then when i was filming hinderman he landed on me, jibbed my shoulder and then popped a 180 to ride away. probably one of THE scariest runs of my life. Anywoays, we both came out injury free, and got a few sick shots doing it....here it is. [video:http://www.vimeo.com/10246256 500x500]
from making tricks for Nine knights edit to winning a 2nd stop of Quiksilver Slovenia freeski tour and hurting ankle and knee again to shooting on Vogel and having a blast with friendsin the middle of filming sessionin the second run got almost a perfect score with pretzel270off, sw1080, sw cork5gettin ready for slaying it with 4frnt CRJTHE playgroundyou also think this is the perfect landing for a perfect jump?just 3 of us today on this side of the mountainbros before hoesmade a corner jump at the end of a day...you see the end of the landind on the right side?Sendind cork3 to that exact spot...went huge and ate shit...legs of steel? You just have to imagine what happens when you make it, not what happens if you don't make it. I couldn't land this one this time...but am sure it's going to happen!
For us that have been skiing since twintip, CRJ always inspired. Yes, it was CR who did it as far as I know, the first 1440 that is.Way back, not many of you punks have been skiing that long, during the era of "The Game", "Propaganda" and "Ski movie", the early years of PoorBoyz and MSP a yung skier with a small afro came and clamed a piece of the skiing world, if I can say that. He landed some tricks before enoyne else and with good style to, so from that point on he was always one of the guys to watch when the new movies came out. Always big and "safe".A trendsetter when it came to triks and style!A good guy with a healthy veiew on life, a core skiier that represented what I like about our sport, a guy that will be missed!!! I think people would say that it is unfair after his comback that nearly ended his career. I will try to bring his/our type of skiing out to the kids. You will live on.Erik
hopefully i can make it in with these 13 tricks [video:http://vimeo.com/10076072 350x260] http://www.nineknights.com
Before i ever hit a park jump, i watched Ski Movie 3, the Front Line. More specifically, i watched CR Johnson and Tanner Hall, nearly exclusively. I'd get home from school, and immediately plug in that old VCR and rewind The Front Line first to CR's part, then fast forward to Tanner's. Invincible, by Capone-n-Noreaga, was the first hip hop song i truly fell in love with, followed shortly by Madness by Deltron 3030. When i listened to them, i was watching CR and Tanners parts all over again. This was 2002. I was in fourth grade, less than 5 feet tall, and had never hit a rail. By 2003 i had hit my first rail, done my first 360, and listened to the Wu-Tang Clan. More importantly, i had found a true passion...freestyle skiing. Images of CR in the backcountry captivated me and kept me entertained throughout the fifth, sixth and seventh grade. Cork 7 to bio 10 BC booter line. Bio 12s. Tanners gorilla style. "Gorilla style" became my favorite term for a while. When i learned that CR was from North Lake Tahoe, a new goal was set before me. I was gonna rep South Lake just as hard as CR rep'd North Lake. I wanted to be the next CR Johnson. I wanted to be the next Tanner Hall. Flash forward 5 years. I was still skiing, still trying to emulate the stars of Ski Movie 3. By this time, however, i was skiing for 4frnt, Electric, and through Jimbo with Electric, Spyder. I was invited to my first Team Summit, a yearly gathering of the Spyder Team in Boulder, Co. This was my first encounter with CR Johnson. I had followed his career ruthlessly. The previous year was the season of his accident, and he was still in a cloudy state of mind when i met him. I never knew CR before his accident, but even in his injured mindset he was Completely Righteous. CR was the first person i have ever been starstruck by, and this feeling of being in the presence of a true master, a sensei...it never left, throughout all of the following years. The next few years i ran into CR regularly, whether it was at Team Summits or early season skiing at Northstar. I had the honor of watching him battle and defeat his injury, with a relentless and vicious attitude that only protrudes from those who have real passion; life passion. In a complete parallel to CR's recovery was my mother's. In 2008, she had a seizure while working and discovered that she had a large brain tumor. On november 18 she went into open brain surgery. The next few years, until very recently, were a collossal battle for my mother. Of any form of motivation that helped her, though, the inspiration that she got from CR and his odyssey, the same odyssey that my mom was now going through, was by far the largest. She was always asking me what CR did, how he did it, and if she could. I would say yes, mom, be like CR, you'll make it through this eventually, with the same passion as CR. I'd go on long walks with her late at night and converse mainly of CR and their correlation, the common goal that they both shared. If you have not been around a traumatic brain, you will not know of the struggle one faces- but you really do re-learn everything, just as CR said. I watched my mother draw from CR's legacy in order to persevere for the next years, watched her re-learn nearly everything, watched her recover in the same way as CR. Eventually, as i promised my mom i would, i introduced her to CR. She wanted to meet him, honor him, do what she felt she had to do in order to thank him. I think the day she met CR will always remain one of the most moving days of her life. Neither she nor I ever told CR what he had done, though...it was not something either of us had the courage to explain to him. This power that he gave my mom, even though he physically did nothing to help her, remained an underlier for my relationship with CR. And this was HIM, he was a motivater, an idol. He was righteous, in every form of the word. When spending a day with CR, if you listened, you gained a huge amount of spiritual guidance. Over the summer, at COC, CR coached one or two campers a week- and completely turned their life around. He would turn the shyest camper into an outgoing kid, and teach them how to ski while doing it. These campers followed CR in every way...how could they not? He changed lives without knowing it, thinking of it, or intending to. I will always look at myself as one of these campers, from that first day i saw Ski Movie 3...there has been no influence like him. Mad love, CR. You have changed lives, including my own, and we are still following you brother, always.
CRJFirst let me start by saying that my warmest feelings go to CRJ family and friends.I personally did not get the pleasure of knowing CRJ personally, or to run on skis along with him.But as a skier, it is impossible not to know who was Cr, and to be influenced by what he did on skis. Remember the first time I saw CRJ in an MSP movie. The first time I had seen someone do a 1260 I remember sitting there completely paralyzed and just thought, wow. Is it possible! That was seen in "slow motion" sometimes to say that. After that it was just as exciting every time a movie came out to see what he was up to. I will say that he was one of the rider who has helped shape the sport we are doing. Both as a jibber and a Freeskier. For he could do it all. From hitting 4m high airs in the pipe, to shred the major lines on the mountain! An example is the big fighten he had to come back after the head injury he incurred. From being kept in a coma, waking up and barely able to communicate. To going back up on the mountain, dropping 15m cliffs with 360 It shows a love for the sport that is unique.I Believe that u can ask anyone who is above average interested in skiing if they know who CRJ is, and they will will answer yes. RIP CRJ
I first met CR last summer at COC in Whistler, BC and it was a dream come true. Growing up in the ski world i looked up to CR as one of my biggest inspirations and and one of my great role models. When i found out that we would be skiin together, it was a feeling i cant describe. Cr was truly one of the nicest and most caring people i have ever met. He was drivin, hardworking, fun, and overall an amazing person. Hanging out with CR on and off the hill was literally a life changing expreience, i never thought i could learn so much from one person in that short amount of time. The way CR talked about his experiences and what he had gone through astonished me because he was so positive and always saw the good in everything, never the negatives. I came away from my trip to whistler with a new friend and a whole new look on life thanks to CR. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten, he is a legend to skiing and his name will live on forever. Rest in Peace CR, One Love.
The 4frnt team, and the ski world in general suffered a big loss in the way too early departure of CR Johnson on the 24th of February. CR's approach to the ski industry has inspired many, me included, and his come-back after the head injury in 2005 showed us all that nothing is impossible as long as you've got passion and determination in your life. My thoughts goes first and foremost out to his family and friends in Squaw Valley. But also to the whole skiing community, who has lost one of the most inspiring and colorful contender. RIP CRJ
Being a part of 4FRNT allowed me to be introduced to some very memorable and great people one of those people was CR. I of course met him with the casual hellos and whats up. But when i finally got to spend some time with CR it left me with great memories. One of my most vivid memories was The night of the sunset shoot at COC this past summer. That was a night to remember and at the end of a great session i remember all of us standing having beers and waiting for the chairs to take us down. Everyone was in a extremely good mood and CR was joking around and just talking about how much he loved skiing and that moments like that night were unforgettable. I at the time was the only girl up there and am slightly shy, and i remember being so thankful CR joined me into the conversation and made me laugh and feel more comfortable. So that i could enjoy the moment as much as everyone else instead of being worried about being to shy to join in. I only new CR for a short time but in the time he showed me that he was willing to include a shy little girl and just wanted everyone to enjoy life as much as he did, and for that i thank him. I am so sad that i will not get to spend another amazing summer with him. We will miss you CR.
