The J Hole Expierence

taken from www.yleski.com Just finished up an unreal weekend in Jackson Hole.  The weekend was filled with lots of fireworks, a little too much booze, and way too many good times. Stan Evans and I departed SLC on Friday and headed straight for the TGR office located in Teton Village.  I was fortunate enough to get to peep all my shots along with the teaser they were in the process of creating. Once again, the movie is looking to be another banger from the depths of the TGR editing suite... keep your eyes peeled for their teaser, droppin very soon! After a long night of watching footage, Beer B Q'in and eventually lining up our place to crash, we found homage at Travis Rice's beautiful spread.  Now of course I was a little weirded out staying there at first, I had never met Travis and of course didn't want to be the weird guy in the morning that made himself at home.  Travis remains one of the most respected snow riders to date and one I hold in the highest regard... you can imagine my excitement and bewilderment to get the opportunity to scratch the life's surface of such an influential individual... Stan and I enjoy breakfast on the deck We mad the trek to Alpine to load up on cheap Wyoming fireworks. A damn good investment for the 4th. Erin Comstock came up to join us Saturday night for one of the biggest house parties i have ever attended.  This guy, Dave, had a mansion located below Snowking the local night shred hill in Jackson.  I mean, catered food, free booze, DJ, d floor, the whole works!  After the assistance of some pain medication and a few drinks I allowed myself to slide onto the d floor and get a taste of that oh so missed zone!  The knee still feels great, another test passed, STOKED! Well all good things come to an end and before I left Jackson I made one pit stop at Travis's Art Gallery, which he is running in collaboration with Mikey P, the infamous artist who has graced the snowboard industry with his spiritual yet futuristic images since the mid 90's.  Travis showed me some footage he had from his recent trip to AK, which was absolutely mind blowing to say the least. Another positive step up for snowboarding and one I only thought existed in dreams.... hats off to ya Travis you've done it again.

TORNADOS

A week ago I got an email from my mom claiming that her hometown of Wadena MN, had been hit hard by numerous tornados. We currently have about a dozen family members residing in Wadena.  Fortunately everyone was ok, some damage to the houses but no injurys or deaths within the family. The town itself sustained 2 deaths.   Then to top it off this Father's day a tornado touched down in my hometown of Billings MT, where my parents and close cousins, grandma, and other family members live.   [video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQcukxj8Fto]   I have my fingers crossed no tornados hit here in Salt Lake, but it seems too coincidental for some reason that my family as a whole, outside of myself have been directly affected by Torndados in the last week.  From Minnesota to Montana...   TAKEN FROM MY NEW WEBSITE www.yleski.com

Makin' Mad Ski's

With the YLE dimension and flex finally dialed, we have switched gears and are now in full production mode of the Renegade. Having all our materials ordered and prepped was the hard (and less fun) part of the project, but with all that taken care of and our core's arrival this Monday, it's time to start crankin' these bad-boys out. Since 4FRNT's inception back in 2002, our goal has been to work hands on with our product and actually be involved with the production. With the White Room producing the Renegade full time this summer, this is a dream come true and we couldn't be more excited, just look at the expression on Cody's face. Sorry Cody, I had to. All jokes aside, the White Room and the Renegade are going to rock the world of skiing for years to come. It is for this reason that this blog has been developed, and I for one am happy to be apart of it. For those of you who have pre-ordered a pair, keep checking the blog and maybe you'll see some pictures of your skis being built, such as this pair: Also at this point in time we are remodeling the 4FRNT Store here at the office, but we're never to busy to help answer any questions from our loyal fans and customers so feel free to give us a shout.  Until next time remember: "If you will it dude, it is no dream."

Last laughs at Squaw Valley USA

Living in SLC, UT, I am so spoiled with late season conditions. You could almost bet that although we'll have sun all week long, when Snowbird opens for the weekend, as they have been for the last month and probably will continue in doing so through til July, we can find cold snow. This is why when a recent trip to Squaw to standup in my boy Mike Weir's wedding, I brought along some park skis to shred the almost certain hot, spring corn. These types of conditions is what being a California skier is all about. Mid season, fresh after a storm, you can count on spongy snow pack with lots of give. Not so true about Utah, where no matter what time of year, the northern aspects hold cold and blower. I rolled into Squaw last week Thursday and its snowing. I'm psyched. I got my gear, my hometown childhood best bud, Luke Claybourn itching to get on hill and I count the minutes til the phone rings. "Sterbenz, we're headed up tomorrow!" Luke I reply, "Tram doesn't run til Saturday?" Jokes on me. "That's the point!" Luke exclaimed. Ahah, we're hiking, from the bottom up - I get it. Luke went on to tell me that by Saturday, even though we'll have lift access, the snow will be fully set up, the backcountry even if they let us hike, will be roller balled and so we're going up a day early, step by step, to get Squaws final pow day. And I'm down. Here's some shots from the mission. Luke ski'd without any regrets. A true Squaw local and a passionate skier I highly doubt could be paralleled. The view of KT22 as we make our way up Shirley Canyon. Still looking ready for action. A shot of Luke with Siberia Express in the background. Over knee deep boot packing. Luke grabbed this shot of me as we make our way up 5 ft snow drifts towards our prize. Once on-top, we scout the Palisades and we prep for the final push to the top. The bowl was all ours.   Perfect example of how much snow, the upper Patrol shack on Sibo ridge - buried. Here's Luke atop Schmidiots - a line made famous by Scot Schmidt. We thought it was going down until we looked down it. Nope. Not today. A tribute to our brother CR. CRJ's prepped for the center line. CR is proud. Peep the vid: http://vimeo.com/12284415 [video:http://vimeo.com/12284415 400x300] This was a favorite line of mine. We cruised down the Light Towers shortly after the Chimney and then rolled up on Adrenaline Rock. Classic Squaw right there. A final photo of Luke Claybourn. I can't say enough. Thanks so much for being motivating and staying on the path of Squaw radness. You're the man.

As time has progressed, we have been pushing forward with the YLE and adjustments to the ski are nearly finalized. We are very excited about this new addition to our signature series, and we are equally confident you will love them too. Here we see team rider Cody Barnhill putting some final touches on the latest pair outside the 4FRNT headquarters.  Now we are switching things up, and getting back to Eric Hjorleifson's newest addition to the 4FRNT arsenal, the Renegade. The Renegade will be made solely in our Salt Lake City headquarters, and will be available for the 10-11 season. Our goal for the summer is to produce between 250 and 300 pairs of these skis, so there's hardly a lack of work to be done. Here's a picture of me... over my head in fiberglass (which I now know to be the itchiest substance known to man). As the weekend approaches, we're making sure everything is in order to start pressing next week. This means that while you guys get to go out and Memorialize on Monday, we'll be here, slaving away in the shop to make sure you get the absolute best product next season (a true labor of love).  The mastermind behind the Renegade, Eric Hjorleifson. With most of the prep work completed, but still a lot to be done, this summer in the White Room will certainly be a busy one. If you or any friends are interested to see what we've got going on, come on down to the headquarters and check things out, located at 2900 s. West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Till next time, shred it if you got it! --The White Room   Photography by : Simon Harwood Jeremy Handly Matt Sterbenz

Spring Testing of the YLE

by 4FRNT
May 25th 2010 - 6 comments

With Snowbird now staying open until the 20th of June, this spring has been the perfect chance to test out Wiley Miller's new signature ski, the YLE.  Friday, Cody Barnhill and Austin Ramaley took to the slopes to test the prototypes, and the feedback was great. Still trying to work out all the kinks and quirks, the YLE is shaping up to be quite the ski. Here we see Austin getting a real taste of the YLE.   The YLE prototype has been a product of our White Room, the prototyping lab we use to create innovations like the Renegade. The YLE once complete, will be produced at our factory in Europe and the factory will receive our final physical ski for testing and flex matching. This process ensures all 4FRNT's no matter where they are made, come out as our riders demand. Check back in The White Room for more updates as the summer months continue to find out the latest product developments and news, and feel free to ask any questions regarding the project. Until next time, I am signing out.

Bralorne education

This season we spent well over a month in Bralorne filming with MSP.   It was great to spend a decent amount of time based in such a remote town with non of the distractions or obligations that clog our high passed life and prevent us from focusing on what we do best skiing!!!   The Catchers Mitt aka The Bratter Horn. I scoped this line for 3 year before everything aligned and I was able to ski it.   I feel that this was one of the most educational trips of my ski career. We dealt with one of the sketchiest deep instability plagued snow pack I have experienced. Lingering surface hoar layers are very scary unpredictable especially once they are barred  a meter down. These difficult and dangerous conditions kept us on our toes, shattered everyones confidence and taught are entire crew how important it is to be patient.    Watch out for that cornice...   Despite the unstable conditions we were able to stick it out and slowly chip away gradually working our way into bigger terrain and ultimately skiing some of the best lines of the season so far.   The best straight line I've been able to do so far. Probably one of the most fun lines I've skied!!!   This is one of the most beautiful zones I've seen.     Great times, great friends, thank you Bralorne!!!   Eric

4FRNT Team Shoot at Snowbasin

by 4FRNT
May 11th 2010 - 0 comments

Last week, we got the opportunity to travel up to Snowbasin to hit a few private features the terrain park crew had concocted for us. We grabbed team riders Will Berman, Finn Anderson, Cody Barnhill and Andy Partridge, and drove up from our Salt Lake headquarters. The 'Basin crew had built us a 100-ft booter, a gap-box, a down rail and a super-gnarly rail to tree gap. After a brief warm-up we decided to hit the gap box first. Will Berman throwing a rodeo off the box. Andy Finn. 450 all day long. After the gap box, we made our way over to the field goal rail. This think was insane! The more people looked at it, the tighter the gap in the trees got. One of the local rippers who was up there with us guinea pigged it, and ended up breaking out some branches in the middle. Luckily, that created just enough space for Cody "Big Mountain" Barnhill to step up and hit the most technical rail feature of the day. A failed nose-tap ended up breaking one of the trees, so we headed to the down rail. A quick session on the rail got a bunch of shots in the bag for all of our riders. Finn. Switch-450 on. We also set up a flip cam to film the warm up session on the down rail. Here is some raw footage from it: http://vimeo.com/11652062 With the sun going down, we moved to the biggest feature of the day, the 100-ft booter. Cody Barnhill hits a smooth three. Once the sun went down, we put a wrap on our two days of shooting. Keith Carlsen was the professional photographer on the shoot, and Sam Peters shot the video. Look for and edit, and some banger shots come from these two in the coming weeks and months. Special thanks once again to the whole Snowbasin crew for making this happen. Especially the two Tims for setting us up and making great features. You can see more photos and video on our Facebook page. -- Words and photos by Phil Herbert.

Team week announced, July 8-15 at Camp of Champions

by 4FRNT
Apr 23rd 2010 - 0 comments

God made man, or so my elementary teach told me so, then man went skiing, then man found Canada and eventually, Canadians built Whistler. God I love that freakin place. By now I'm sure you've heard the news, 4FRNT was in Whistler, competed in the anti-comp Orage Masters and took 2nd place. If not, here's a video showing we did: http://www.4frnt.com/index.php/4frnt-tv-menu?lang=en&album=113775 The beauty of this week's accomplishment is that all members of our team came from Camp of Champions - An action sports ski and snowboard camp operating in the summers at Whistler, on Blackcomb's Horstman Glacier.  4FRNT has promoted a team week for the last 3 summers at Camp of Champions in part of our sponsorship with camp. Team week is a time when we as skiers take over camp. We host contests for wild camp dares and rediculous achievements and certainly invite all the 4FRNT pros to come kick it with the campers and teach the game. Finn, Will and Mack were at our team week in the past. Even better, they each one the coveted 1 year 4FRNT sponsorship that give away at camp from our team week. This award goes to the camper that comes prepped to shred hard. We don't ask you to be the best skier but it certainly will help get the ball rollin in y our favor to become a pro skier one day. Just look at how hard these guys crushed the park last week: http://www.4frnt.com/index.php/4frnt-tv-menu?lang=en&album=127953 Team week is the place you want to be come July 8 - 15th at Camp of Champions (http://www.campofchampions.com) If you ever needed a reason to tell your parents why you need to be at camp, here's a few: 1. Its Whistler - everyone that is someone in skiing has either been there or will be there. 2. Camp of Champions - It more than skiing, it's a way of life and you'll never forget it. 3. 4FRNT team week - Its your chance to ski with pros, learn some tricks and get spons'd. Team week is all time so get signed up today cause its going to sell out.

Whoa Whistler

God made man, or so my elementary teach told me so, then man made skiing, then man found Canada and finally Canadians built Whistler. I love that freakin place. Its clear by now you know the news from Whis, we took 2nd. Will, Mack, Finn and Kelt proved they right amongst the finest on snow last weekend and me, well, couldn't be more psyched. The dope thing about it all is that all three men (really their boyz and children at best by for age purposes, if they can drink in Whistler - then they're men) - all came from once being a camper at Camp of Champions. Now I know you might think thats whatever but check it. Every year, we host a team week. We are the only ski company that ever gave a damn about doing this and because we get so many rad shreds up there in the summer time, why not carve out some of the best damn skiing on Whistler for friends of 4FRNT for a week? So we did and so we will continue.  Every year, team week grows with new riders in attendance, fancier features and more than imagined mindless contests to award ridiculous achievements. After all its camp, so keep it fun. In addition, we then sponsor one camper from that week with a year long sponsorship from 4FRNT. This is to be what you make of it. Some web-press, newsletter stuff, obviously gear and just your ticket to show us what you got all year long. This years Masters team was built of 3 4FRNT team members that all won this award in the past. Just goes to show, although it may just be a crack in the window of opportunity for your ski career, if you make the cut, it will pay off. 4FRNT team week at Camp of Champions is July 8-15 (session C). Camp is already committed to host some of our team as coaches like Finn Anderson, Mack Jones, Will Berman, Luke Van Valin, Cody Barnhill as well guests Eric Hjorleifson, Wiley Miller, Toby Hammer, Andy Partridge and others.  So if you ever needed another reason why you should come to camp, here you go: 1. Its Whistler - best place to ski, skate, party and have fun with the world of skiing 2. Camp of Champions - Biggest, baddest, longest running ski and snowboard camp ever. 3. 4FRNT team week - Meet the pros, shred for fun comps, get spons'd. Check out 4FRNT TV (http://www.4frnt.com/index.php/4frnt-tv-menu?lang=en&album=127953) for our latest hype vids from Whistler and Camp of Champions website (http://www.campofchampions.com) for info on how to get signed up for your best summer ever.
